Mix shortening and sugar. Add egg, molasses and water. Mix thoroughly.
Sift dry ingredients. Stir in. Chill dough.
Drop by spoonfulls on ungreased sheet, 2 inches apart.
Bake 400 degrees, about 8 minutes or until no imprint remains when touched lightly. Frost while warm, spread with pastry brush or spatula.
Notes: These turn out best if cooked on a flat silver cookie sheet. My bumpy airbake sheet doesn't allow them to grip the edges and they spread flat like cake. Mom's black cookie sheets always burned them.
