Ingredients

  • cup shortening
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 small egg
  • ½ cup molasses
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 cups flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon cloves
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ tablespoons milk

Directions

Mix shortening and sugar. Add egg, molasses and water. Mix thoroughly.

Sift dry ingredients. Stir in. Chill dough.

Drop by spoonfulls on ungreased sheet, 2 inches apart.

Bake 400 degrees, about 8 minutes or until no imprint remains when touched lightly. Frost while warm, spread with pastry brush or spatula.


Notes

These turn out best if cooked on a flat silver cookie sheet. My bumpy airbake sheet doesn't allow them to grip the edges and they spread flat like cake. Mom's black cookie sheets always burned them.
